The European Day of Jewish Culture in Belgium

The route of the European Jewish heritage in the Province of Antwerp: Jewish Heritage route was conceived a few years ago in Strasbourg. Our aim was to show the many aspects and rich variety of the Jewish culture in Europe, and how the threads of Jewish culture are woven in our social fabric, via schools, synagogues and cemses our Province from its northern point to its southern tip. Throughout, the Jewish people have been an integral part of the artistic, cultural and economic development of the province while at the same time, remaining true to the tenets of Judaism. B’nai B’rith Antwerpen, with the help of the Province of Antwerp, the support of the Flemish Government, and the “Contact Forum for Heritage institutions” is delighted once more to invite visitors to share some of the most precious landmarks of our
Heritage Route.

On September the 6th 2009, the 10th European Day of Jewish Culture, guests are welcome to visit free and learn more about some of the most important Antwerp sites in the history of Jewish culture. The one- day tour following the traces of Jewish
heritage across the Province of Antwerp highlights many of the most important landmarks in our neighbourhood. We welcome your visit, we look forward to sharing our heritage with you,
and hope that it will be the first of many tours to our proud City and Province.

Europese dag van Joodse Cultuur in België / Journée Europénne de la Culture Juive en Belgique

De idee van de Europese route van het Joods Erfgoed ontstond enkele jaren geleden in Straatsburg en heeft als doel de aandacht te trekken op de veelzijdigheid en de rijkdom van de joodse cultuur in Europa. Talrijk zijn de sporen van joodse aanwezigheid: in cultuur en kunst, in economische activiteiten, met synagogen, studiehuizen en begraafplaatsen. De Provincie Antwerpen vormt een uitermate belangrijke schakel in de Europese route van het Joods Erfgoed. De specificiteit van de joodse aanwezigheid in de provincie getuigt van een harmonieuze integratie in de lokale economische, industriele en culturele ontwikkeling,evenwel met een groot respect voor de joodse religie. De Antwerpse route van het joods erfgoed doorkruist onze provincie van noord naar zuid. B’nai B’rith Antwerpen met de medewerking van de Provincie Antwerpen , de steun van de Vlaamse Overheid & de Vlaamse Commissie voor Monumentenzorg wil voor de 4de keer een aantal waardevolle ankerpunten laten bezoeken, op deze 10ste Europese Dag van de Joodse Cultuur. De eendaagse tocht langs de sporen van het Joods Erfgoed dwars door de Provincie Antwerpen is bedoeld als een verkenning van heel wat waardevolle historische plaatsen in de provincie. Een uitnodiging voor een verder bezoek.
