Jewish Azerbaijan

Jews have lived in Azerbaijan for many centuries and can be divided into two groups: Jews of Persian origin, also known as Caucasian Mountain Jews, and Ashkenazim.  Mountain Jews have lived in Azerbaijan for many centuries and are said to be descendents of the Lost Tribes that left the Land of Israel in 722 BCE.  Ashkenazim settled in Azerbaijan in the 19th century, coming mainly from Russia, and others arrived during World War II to escape the Nazis.  The Jewish community has traditionally had good relations with wider society and, while many Jews left for Israel in the 1990s, Jewish life continues to flourish.
