Born and educated in Edinburgh, Scotland, Spark was a relative latecomer to novel-writing and much of her early work is either criticism or poetry. She spent part of her early life in Africa.

In 2008, the Sunday Times Newspaper placed her at number 8 in the 50 greatest British writers since 1945.
